We are back in the saddle at least for this review. After a brief break for some travel and work, we made our way to Field & Tides for the ‘F’ in our A to Z series.
Before starting our meal, we grabbed a couple of delicious cocktails. Pam ordered the Oaxaca Old Fashioned made with Veneno reposado tequila, Bruxo Xmezcal, bitters and agave, garnished with an orange peel. It was a surprising cocktail that was light with a hint of smoke from the mezcal. Jeff decided on the Broken Arrow, a well-balanced bourbon-based drink with Basil Hayden, Amaro, Aperol, lemon and simple syrup.
For our starter, we ordered the fried Snapper Collars – sweet and savory, somewhat similar to chicken wings. They had a great balance of spice and sweetness with the firm texture of the collar meat.
We both opted for soup as a second course. Jeff ordered the She Crab Soup. It was rich and creamy with a hearty portion of jumbo lump crab, a hint of sherry and boiled egg. Pam enjoyed their Chicken & Sausage Gumbo with its dark roux and just the right amount of file. Two very different soups but equally enjoyable.
Moving on to the main course, we had so many amazing options and were given several recommendations, everything from the fried chicken piccata to the cavatelli pasta with duck. After much debate, we settled on a shrimp dish and a scallop dish. Jeff went with the chili marinated jumbo Shrimp which is served with cheesy herbed grit cakes and fried green tomatoes. The shrimp on their own were very good but the cheesy grit cakes took it to the outstanding level. Pam picked her favorite of Scallops, served over a creamy shrimp and crab risotto finished with a beurre blanc sauce. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and the risotto was creamy and rich. Can’t go wrong with either dish.
This wasn’t our first visit to Field and Tides and it certainly will not be our last. The staff was excellent and very nice. If you are looking for a nice dinner or a quick casual meal, you won’t be disappointed.
